 Backed Into a Corner

Showing teeth is the one thing an animal does when it is threatened and feels like there is nothing else it can do but fight to survive. The band “Showing Teeth” displays that kind of intensity on their debut single, which was recently released and is called “Labyrinth”. As previously stated in an interview with WOUB’s Bradley Cunningham, the band name originated from Showing Teeth’s fascination with animal psychology and response to fear. It makes the concept of the song and the band as a whole more raw and relatable from an emotional perspective. The message behind the song is people pleasing and the struggle of pushing yourself to be accepted by those people, just to feel trapped again.

Matt Halpern of “Periphery”: Drums

 Zakk Cervini: Mixing and Mastering

The Future

Given the band is about to release a new single called “Rip” on February 13, I think it would be only right to discuss how Showing Teeth will continue to convey their ferocity in their sound and how they can utilize that ferocity to express more raw emotion over time. The title of “Labyrinth” really helps to convey the message that people pleasing can feel like an endless maze that is hard to escape from. In that same sense, I hope their future songs align with the raw emotion that Showing Teeth is trying to display with her vocals. I want to see more highs similar to the beginning of Labyrinth. I want to see more of the fast pace she displayed in the rap-style cadence in the breakdown on Labyrinth. I want to see even more pent-up anger released as they continue to release more tracks over time. According to Showing Teeth herself, many people criticized her vocals and said that they were awful and needed work. I personally love her vocals. Again, it adds to the quality of the music. She has done many one-take vocal performances, famously from her car studio , which helped amass over 200,000 followers before the band ever released this debut track. As I have talked about in another post, it is both the future of heavy music and music in general. And while I might have issues with that, there is no doubt it can lead to awesome projects like this one. I really can’t wait to see what else this outfit has to offer, and hopefully, they have legs to run for a long time in the scene.
